6 must-have evergreen grasses for the border

Evergreen grasses are hugely popular and fashionable plants these days. They have always been one of Ladybrook Nursery’s favourites, so it’s now pleasing to see that these garden gems are starting to become must-have plants for the border. They’re popular for many reasons; not least of which is the vast array of leaf colours available, from gold and copper to rich red, and they also provide the garden with some of the most attractive seedheads. Evergreen grasses add graceful texture and shape and are the perfect foil to other flowering plants.

Two of Ladybrook Nursery’s favourite evergreen grasses are the Brizia and the Deschampsia. Briza Media is one of the early flowering grasses followed by Deschampsia which flowers later in the season. Both will flower throughout the summer and into autumn. Even in winter these grasses will continue provide a spectacular display, particularly when the early morning frost settles on the spent flower heads.

Briza Media

Briza-MediaAlso known commonly as quaking grass, Briza Media tufted evergreen grass with purplish-tinted, green leaves. In summer locket-shaped, green-purple flowers, which fade to buff, hang from delicate branches. Lovely in wildflower meadows, their flowers are excellent for drying. Cut down to the ground in late winter before the new foliage appears.

Deschampsia Cespitosa Bronzeschleier

Deschampsia-Cespitosa-BronzeschleierAlso known as tufted hairgrass ‘Bronze Veil’, Deschampsia can be either deciduous or evergreen tufted grasses with linear or thread-like leaves and open flowering panicles in summer. ‘Bronzeschleier’ is a compact evergreen grass with narrow, stiff, dark green leaves and arching panicles of light bronze spikelets in summer

Deschampsia Cespitosa Schottland

Deschampsia-Cespitosa-SchottlandAlso known as Hassock grass Schottland, Deschampsia Cespitosa Schottland is a dense, clump-forming, semi-evergreen to evergreen grass with rigid, leathery, linear, dark green leaves and erect stems bearing airy, arching panicles of pale yellow flower spikelets in summer.

Deschampsia Flexuosa

Deschampsia-FlexuosaDeschampsia can be deciduous or evergreen, tufted grasses with linear or thread-like leaves and open flowering panicles in summer. ‘Tatra Gold’ is a compact clump-forming evergreen grass with slender, bright yellow-green leaves and airy, pale silver/purple flower panicles in early summer.

Deschampsia Cespitosa Goldschleier

Deschampsia-Cespitosa-GoldschleierDeschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldschleier’ is a tussock-forming evergreen grass with stiff, upright dark green leaves. In summer it will produce plumes of beautiful golden flowers. If left on the stems, the flower heads will dry and bleach, adding texture and colour to the winter garden.

Deschampsia Cespitosa Tardiflora

Deschampsia-Cespitosa-TardifloraAlso known as the Gold Veil Tufted hairgrass, Deschampsai Cespitosa ‘Goldschleier’ is a clump-forming evergreen grass with stiff, linear dark green leaves and open, arching panicles of golden spikelets in summer.
